Bio-gas Lightning Protection Testing

Lighting Protection Testing

Bio-gas Lightning conductors are designed to protect properties in the event of a lightning strike. Regular testing is required to ensure they are working effectively. At Earthing Equipment Supplies Southern Ltd, we survey and inspect the system before carrying out three different types of testing using calibrated meggers. We conduct all testing in accordance with BS EN 62305: 2012, the current British standard. We then provide you with a detailed inspection report containing our recommendations.

FAQ – Lightning Protection Testing

1. What is lightning protection testing?

Lightning protection testing is a service aimed at evaluating the effectiveness and safety of a lightning protection system. It involves a comprehensive inspection, assessment, and testing of various components of the system to ensure it meets the required standards and provides adequate protection against lightning strikes.

2. Why is lightning protection testing important?

Lightning protection testing is essential to ensure the safety of people and property and electrical systems. Lightning strikes can cause significant damage, including structural damage, fires, electrical surges, and harm to individuals. Regular testing helps identify any deficiencies or faults in the system, allowing for timely repairs or upgrades to maintain the system’s effectiveness.

3. Who should consider lightning protection testing?

Any property or facility that has a lightning protection system installed should consider regular testing. This includes residential homes, commercial buildings, industrial facilities, schools, hospitals, and other structures that are at risk of lightning strikes. It is especially important for high-risk structures, such as tall buildings, critical infrastructure, and locations prone to frequent thunderstorms.

4. How often should lightning protection systems be tested?

The frequency of lightning protection testing may vary depending on factors such as local regulations, industry standards, and the specific characteristics of the installation. In general, it is recommended to conduct a full inspection and testing every one year. However, it is advisable to consult with a qualified lightning protection professional to determine the appropriate testing intervals for your specific system.

5. What does the lightning protection testing process involve?

The lightning protection testing process typically includes the following steps:

  • Visual inspection: A thorough examination of the lightning protection system, including lightning rods, conductors, grounding components, surge protection devices, and bonding connections.
  • Electrical continuity testing: Verification of proper electrical connections and continuity throughout the system.
  • Resistance testing: Measurement of the resistance of grounding components to ensure they meet the required standards.
  • Surge protection assessment: Testing the surge protection devices to confirm their functionality and effectiveness in diverting transient electrical surges caused by lightning strikes.
  • Documentation: Comprehensive reporting of the test results, including any deficiencies found and recommendations for repairs or improvements.

6. Who should perform lightning protection testing?

Lightning protection testing should be carried out by qualified and experienced professionals who specialize in lightning protection systems. These individuals or companies possess the necessary knowledge, expertise, and testing equipment to accurately evaluate and assess the system’s performance.

7. What are the potential outcomes of lightning protection testing?

After lightning protection testing, there can be various outcomes, including:

  • System compliance: The system meets the required standards and provides adequate protection against lightning strikes.
  • Deficiencies identified: The testing reveals deficiencies or faults in the system that need to be addressed for improved safety and effectiveness.
  • Recommendations for improvements: The testing report may include recommendations for repairs, upgrades, or modifications to enhance the system’s performance and compliance.

8. Can lightning protection testing be combined with other services?

Yes, in many cases, lightning protection testing can be combined with other related services. These may include lightning risk assessments, design reviews, system installations, maintenance services, and training programs. Consulting with a lightning protection specialist can help determine the most appropriate combination of services based on your specific needs.

9. How can I find a reputable lightning protection testing provider?

To find a reputable lightning protection testing provider, consider the following steps:

  • Contact “ATLAS” The Association of Technical Lightning & Access Specialists
  • Research: Look for companies or professionals specializing in lightning protection and testing.
  • Qualifications: Check their qualifications, certifications, and experience in the field.
