Lighting protection systems
Early Streamer Emission (ESE) systems
A lightning protection system is an important safety aspect for buildings and structures. It is designed to prevent fires, damage equipment, and protect people from lightning-related hazards. Here is some information about lightning protection systems:
ESE systems are innovative devices installed on a building’s uppermost roof area. They consist of a head unit attached to a stainless steel pole, often mounted within a tripod secured to the roof using heavy concrete blocks. Alternatively, they can be affixed to the side of a building at roof height using specialized brackets.
The pulsar head unit in an ESE system acts as an attractant, generating a leader that captures a lightning strike and safely directs it to the ground. These systems offer an alternative to standard lightning protection methods, boasting several advantages:
- Ease of Maintenance: ESE systems are simpler to install and maintain. You can download the manuals here.
- Affordability: Their installation costs are reasonable.
- Efficiency: ESE systems have undergone rigorous testing to prove their effectiveness.
Earthing Equipment Supplies Southern Ltd, provide ESE systems.
Standarts
- In the United States, NFPA 780 is considered the national design guide for complete lightning protection systems. This standard is updated every three years and includes requirements for various types of structures, including conventional buildings, specialized structures, and outdoor safety recommendations 1.
- UL 96 – Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. standard. (UL) for components of lightning protection systems. It specifies the minimum design requirements for overhead terminals, cable conductors, connectors and fasteners used in quality lightning protection systems.
These devices comply with European standards and are carried out by experienced, qualified operatives. An ESE unit is not governed by BSEN 62305 but by the French standard NF C 17-102.
It is important to note that lightning protection systems play a key role in keeping buildings and people safe, as well as preventing lightning-related property losses.
